PennDOT, officials remind residents to drive safe for Blackout Wednesday

EYEWITNESS NEWS (WBRE/WYOU) — Thanksgiving is on Thursday which makes Wednesday Thanksgiving Eve, otherwise known as Blackout Wednesday, one of the biggest drinking days of the year.

That's why PennDOT and local law officials are reminding folks to think about their safety this holiday season.

In 2023, 74% of the road collisions that occurred over the Thanksgiving weekend were attributed to impaired driving.

In Pennsylvania, there were 982 arrests due to drunk driving.

It's encouraged to always have a plan to get to and from your location.

"Be sober, you can celebrate the holiday season but make plans, have a designated driver, or make arrangements with a Lyft service in order to arrive safely and not injure yourself or others," said Lackawanna County District Attorney Mark Powell.

Another reminder always wear your seat belt and be alert: Put the phone down when driving.
