Restrictions lifted on interstates from Thanksgiving storm

EYEWITNESS NEWS (WBRE/WYOU) — PennDOT has lifted all speed limit and lane restrictions that were enacted for the Thanksgiving storm.

The following vehicle restrictions have been lifted:

Tier 1 and speed limit restrictions on:

Interstate 81: Interstate 476 Exit 194 (Clarks Summit) to New York State line

Interstate 84: in Lackawanna, Wayne, and Pike counties

Interstate 380: in Lackawanna and Wayne Counties

Under Tier 1 restrictions, the following vehicles are not permitted on affected roadways:  

Tractors without trailers

Tractors towing unloaded or lightly loaded enclosed trailers, open trailers, or tank trailers 

Tractors towing unloaded or lightly loaded tandem trailers

Enclosed unloaded or lightly loaded cargo delivery trucks/box trucks that meet the definition of a CMV

Passenger vehicles (cars, SUV’s, pickup trucks, etc.) towing trailers.

Recreational vehicles/motorhomes

School buses, commercial buses, and motor coaches

Motorcycles

Speed limits were restricted to 45 mph on these roadways for all vehicles while the vehicle restrictions were in place.

Commercial vehicles were being restricted to the right lane only.

PennDOT says the purpose of the restriction was to help ensure the interstates remain open during the most challenging conditions of the winter storm.
