Morning commuters face messy road conditions

BEAR CREEK TOWNSHIP, LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — Snow squalls and showers led to a messy morning commute for drivers today.

Plow trucks were out-treating and salting the roads before the sun came up on Thursday.

Snow squalls hit parts of the area like Bear Creek Township on Route 115, where just four and a half miles up the road, and about six minutes later, snow accumulated fast covering the roads.

However, the storm only hit parts of the region.

“The roads were pretty good. I did see some plows putting some salt down and the roads here in Dallas aren’t too bad either,” said Courtney Hoats.

“Pretty slick, especially as I got out this way, pretty slick. More covered as I was going out towards Tunkhannock,” says Demetrius Austrum.

Parts of the back mountain, like the Dallas Shopping Center off Memorial Highway, saw a couple of inches of snow throughout the morning.

Coming in waves from snow squalls, impacting those on the road.

“They can be very tricky and they come out of nowhere and it makes the roads very slick and hard to see so you really do have to pay attention you know in weather like this,” says Austrum.

Plows were out by the dozens.

Drivers say those behind the wheel need to be smart in quick-moving storms.

“Look outside, make sure you, you know, clean your car off, and make sure you drive safe on the roads,” said Austrum.

But when asked if they’re surprised to see how much snow NEPA has had in the past couple of weeks, they had this to say.

“It’s to be expected. We’re in December so it kind of comes with the territory around here,” says Austrum.

“I kind of like the snow so I’m glad it’s coming back. So hopefully we get a lot this year,” said Hoats.
