SCRANTON, LACKAWANNA COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — We've already experienced our first couple of cold snaps this year, and below-average temperatures are heading our way later this week.
You may be tempted to touch the thermostat and turn the heat up but energy experts say you can save money by keeping your thermostat between 68 and 70 degrees and lowering it at night.
Here are many more simple steps you can take to prevent high energy bills. The winter months don't have to come at the expense of your wallet.
"We want to set the temperature as low as we can, and still be comfortable," said Howe.
NEPA to face soggy midweek as rain moves in
Jonah Howe PPL Regional Affairs Director in Montoursville says it's not too late to make some small energy efficiency adjustments in your home to save on your heating bills.
A big way to save is to reduce the thermostat when no one is home.
"During the day or night time, if we can reduce the thermostat by 7 or 10 degrees for maybe 8 hours a day while we're at work, that can reduce our heating bills by up to 10%," stated Howe.
There are other ways to save at no cost to you. Take advantage of the sun's light and heat.
During the day open the curtains and blinds allowing your room to illuminate and naturally warm up.
Then at night close your curtains and blinds to prevent the heat from escaping.
You can also prevent heat loss by closing the damper to the fireplace when not in use.
"Really a lot of heat can escape through the chimney," says Howe.
Heat rises so in the winter months change ceiling fans to rotate counterclockwise. This will help push warm air and energy bills downward.
Finally, close the gap.
"It's never too late, we can really check our doors, windows, really anywhere in our house that has cracks and we could be losing heat, it's amazing how much of a difference that makes as well," added Howe.
