New life brought to old Scranton theater

SCRANTON, LACKAWANNA COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — New life has been brought into an old theater in Downtown Scranton. It's been almost a year since new owners took over the centuries-old building and they are celebrating by giving back to the community.

A new marquee hangs above the entrance to the Ritz Theater on Wyoming Avenue in Downtown Scranton.

Since the new owner, Jim Olecki, and his partner bought the building in December of 2023, nearly $1,000,000 in renovations have been done to this 117-year-old building. The 500-seat theater was also renovated.

"We upgraded sound, lighting, projectors. We put up LED boards. We put a bar inside the theater. We painted it, warmed it up in terms of nostalgic feeling," Olecki explained.

Olecki says more than 100 shows a year are slated to take place here, showcasing a variety of genres to attract people of all ages.

Olecki's true passion is to inspire children. In the Spring of 2025, there are plans to start a Children's Theater Program called Electric City Playhouse at The Ritz.

"That'll be an ongoing program. It's eight weeks in the Spring, two week summer camp, and eight weeks in the fall," Olecki continued.

Built by an Italian Immigrant Sylvester Poli in 1907, The Ritz was graced by renowned stars, such as George Burns, May West, and Harry Houdini.

Upon entering The Ritz, you can't help but notice the vintage movie.

In addition to the theater, the building also houses seven businesses.

Everything from a restaurant to an ice cream shop to an ax-throwing business.

The venue in the Electric City also features a tattoo parlor, hair salon, and wine bar.

"As you can see, the idea here is to have people and footsteps in the building all day long, and be a full entertainment hub and circulate throughout the day," Olecki stated.

Olecki intends to give back to the community by donating proceeds from several holiday events this season to children in need.

The Ritz is hosting several children's events this weekend such as a Christmas Carol Play, Sensory Santa, movie showings, and Toyland Bingo.
