PennDOT issues speed restrictions amid winter advisory

EYEWITNESS NEWS (WBRE/WYOU) — The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) announced temporary restrictions to the speed limit on several roads in Pennsylvania.

PennDOT is urging drivers to avoid unnecessary travel, but if they must head out, they'll see speeds reduced to 45 miles per hour on the following highways:

Interstate 80 between Exit 101 (Dubois / Penfield / Route 255) in Clearfield County and Exit 210A (Route 15 / Lewisburg) in Union County

Interstate 80 between mile marker 194 (Clinton / Union County line) and mile marker 247 (Columbia / Luzerne County line).

On highways with speed restrictions, commercial vehicles not impacted by the restrictions on the listed roads and other areas must move to the right lane.

In addition to speed restrictions, PennDOT also says commercial trucks and large trucks should avoid traveling on Route 54 between Route 487 in Ralpho Township and Route 61 in Mount Carmel Township in Northumberland County due to the severity of the winter storm.

NWS issues winter advisory, rain, sleet, snow expected to fall

While PennDOT crews have been working to treat the roadways, their priority is to keep the roads passable, not completely free of snow and ice.

PennDOT asks drivers to give plow trucks plenty of space when traveling and should never try to pass a truck while it's spreading winter materials or plowing.

Authorities advise drivers to prepare an emergency kit for their vehicles which should include the following:

Non-perishable food

Water

Blanket

Small shovel

Warm clothes

When assembling an emergency kit, travelers should also include items for special needs of passengers, such as baby food, pet supplies, or medications.
