Holiday gift program sees uptick of kids in need

STROUDSBURG, MONROE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — Hundreds of kids in the Poconos will have gifts under their Christmas tree, thanks to a group of organizations teaming up in Monroe County.

It's an assembly line like Santa's workshop, but the gifts are all donated by the community.

Inside the Stroudsburg nonprofit Just Care Back’s headquarters, volunteers have teamed up with members of Christ Episcopal Church to sponsor families on an angel tag.

“Each angel tag has a local child’s name, their age, their gender, one wish, and two needs on their list,” says Just Care Back Inc. co-founder Chantal Fulgenico.

The Christmas wish program has more than 500 kids registered, doubling the number from last year.

That number raised the call for more elves, to help wrap and get these donations ready to be delivered to kids at the church Saturday.

The countdown for the weekend event is on, and 55 families still need sponsoring.

“Anything is appreciated, whether it’s a monetary donation, whether it’s a toy, even your time,” says Fulgenico.

These groups have a blast donating all of these gifts. Those donations deadline will be on Friday.

Local Girl Scouts pitched in by coloring the tags, and Kiwanis of the Poconos Daybreak group donated books from its Give a Gift of Reading program.

“I think that’s the best part about being so connected to the community is that you see everybody step up in these times and it’s fun because it does have that glitz and glamour around Christmas time, but we do this all year,” said Corissa Gehring, President at Kiwanis of the Poconos Daybreak.
