Zoning approved for Hanover Area School District

HANOVER TOWNSHIP, LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — A huge industrial building in Luzerne County could get new life with the Hanover Area School District.

A zoning hearing was held Tuesday night at the Hanover Township municipal building. A zoning variance was approved and the school district could start to work on having the building operational by the start of the 2026-27 school year.

The idea is to close four elementary schools, pre-k through 6th grade, and consolidate them into the former Mondelez office building.

"Over the last several years, we have a drastic increase in the enrollment within this district. With that being said, we are beyond capabilities within the current buildings that we have. For the expansion of programs, for the accommodation of students so in this building to try to make sure that students are in the best educational environment," said Nathan Barrett, Superintendent, Hanover Area School District.

Officials believe the new building is the most affordable option for the district and will cost around five million dollars after tax credits.
