8 new firefighters sworn in Wilkes-Barre

WILKES-BARRE, LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — Eight new firefighters joined the force in Wilkes-Barre on Monday.

Each firefighter was sworn in individually with their families standing by their sides.

One by one they each placed their hand on the bible and swore the oath.

Mayor George Brown did the swearing-in while Fire Chief Jay Delaney handed over the pins to their loved ones to place on the newly appointed firefighters.

"It makes me feel really good for the residents of the City of Wilkes-Barre and our other firefighters that it will, it's going to increase the firefighter safety, the safety of our residents," Chief Delaney explained.

"Ecstatic, this is a big moment for me, so I'm very grateful for this opportunity to work here," said Firefighter and EMT with the City of Wilkes-Barre Jamie Burke.

"It's a calling, the community being able to help, be involved with people, you know the fact that everyone, in general, is just being able to support people help people in a time of need, it's just been my calling to do that," said Juan Munoz, a Firefighter and EMT with the City of Wilkes-Barre.

Four of the new firefighters will go directly to orientation and start within the next four to six weeks while the other four will head to Allentown for fire academy.
