Officials release details on Sunbury shooting

SUNBURY, NORTHUMBERLAND COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — New details were released Monday on a shooting that took place in broad daylight last week in Northumberland County.

Police say 46-year-old Jared Wolfe of Milton is being accused of shooting and killing his girlfriend while under the influence.

Police were called to the 1000 block of Court Street in Sunbury on Friday around 2:00 p.m.

When police arrived, they found the victim, later identified as Jane White, unresponsive, with a gunshot wound to the chest.

Court documents reveal before the shooting, Wolfe and White were at a friend's house, smoking what they believed to be marijuana.

A search warrant obtained by police soon uncovered that the marijuana Wolfe and his friends used was likely synthetic.

Stefanie Wolownik, Prevention Education Specialist at Wyoming Valley Alcohol and Drug Services, says that, while she couldn't comment specifically on the Sunbury investigation, using synthetic marijuana comes with many risks, because it's manmade.

"Synthetic marijuana is taking any plant material and then spraying it with a chemical to give any sort of high and you don't know what chemical you're getting," Wolownik said.

Wolownik says that since synthetic marijuana is made with a variety of chemicals, it's difficult for the government to regulate it.

It can also cause lots of problems for your health.

"The adverse effects can be elevated heart rate, elevated blood pressure, unconsciousness, tremors, seizures, vomiting, hallucinations," Wolownik explained.

Police say after smoking, Wolfe became very paranoid and thought his friends and the victim were conspiring to kill him and eat him.

That's when Wolfe went into his car and loaded his handgun.

According to police, White tried to join him in his car, but before she could, Wolfe allegedly fired his gun at her. She soon died from her injuries.

Wolfe has been charged with murder and other related charges. He is currently behind bars in the Northumberland County Jail.
