Royals making threes for a good cause

SCRANTON, LACKAWANNA COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — Each year the men's basketball team at the University of Scranton finds a way to help out the community, but for the first time ever they are doing it during their games.

Every 3-point shot the University of Scranton's Men's Basketball team makes is worth more than just three points. With the help of a few local businesses, it's also a $5 donation to the Boys and Girls Club of NEPA.

Bitter cold chills region ahead of weekend snow

"We're always looking to connect with the community in different ways, and we came up with this idea in the early fall school season. We were fortunate enough to find a corporate sponsor in town, the owner of Catch 21, Tequila, Sambuccas, Benny Zirlic. Every dollar helps and goes to the local boys and girls club" said Carl Danzig, Head Coach, Scranton Men's College Basketball.

Each shot from the players not only raises the team's score but also the spirits of children in the boys and girls' program.

"We couldn't be more thrilled, this is such a great opportunity to partner with our local university to serve local kids so really this is kids helping kids," said Julianna Cucura, Development Director, Boys and Girls Club of Northeastern Pennsylvania.

"It's good to know that our play is helping the community," expressed Will McLoughlin, Senior, Scranton Men's College Basketball.

"It's awesome, it makes me and teammates and coaches feel great, we're proud to be helping them," stated Will Marion, Freshman, Scranton Men's College Basketball.

As the season unfolds, the stakes are high, not only for wins but for making a lasting community impact.

"Being able to do this it's certainly kids helping kids which is really great that's what we liked about the idea as well. This really coincides with what we're all about here at the University of Scranton our Jesuit mission and all the community service that we do," said Danzig.

The Royals have made 66 shots, which is already over 300 dollars so far.

The next game for the Royals is this Saturday, January 11 at Susquehanna University.
