Columbia County business opens its doors as code blue center

BERWICK, COLUMBIA COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU)— A community is coming together to help the less fortunate during these cold nights.

Dozens of neighbors gathered together today to get ready for code blue in Berwick.

28/22 news stopped by Spaid's Home Surplus Friday where volunteers set up beds so the homeless in the area will have a warm, safe place to sleep.

They also brought in food and clothing for anyone who needs it.

"We are set up to have children here as well as families. We have a partition if we need to partition an area off. We also have pack and plays for children, we have children's books and toys," stated Krunal Thakore, Operation Director, Gate Traditional Housing and Care Center.

"The outpour of the community, the people in it that have pooled together with the donations with the willingness to volunteer is just overwhelming," explained Tracy Larish, Community Outreach Director.

The shelter opened at 6:00 p.m. Friday and the doors closed at 10:00 p.m..

The guests will need to leave by 8:00 a.m. Saturday morning.
