Community helps local woman battle cancer in 14th Annual Shiver by the River

SCRANTON, LACKAWANNA COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — A local woman with cancer is getting some much-needed help thanks to a running event in Scranton.

Roughly 350 runners and walkers braved the cold and snow this morning for the 14th annual Shiver by the River.

The race along the Lackawanna River Heritage Trail raises funds for a different local cause each year.

This year, all proceeds go toward Lori Perry, who is battling stage four ovarian cancer.

Attendees could pick between a 5K run, 10K run, and a two-mile walk, and none of them let the cold stop them.

"It's the one thing that's always kind of humbled me over the years is how giving the people are here in Northeast PA, not only that but how gritty they are to come out in the cold," said Co-Owner of Scranton Running Company and Race Director Matthew Byrne.

"I was looking at the weather last minute, I said "alright it's gonna be snowin' but we're out here, I'm excited, I'm up early, let's do this," Lake Wallenpaupack runner Christopher Rhatigan explained.

Organizers hoped to raise at least $5,000 to help Perry and her family with medical expenses.
