Borough sees tax increase first time in over 10 years

HARVEYS LAKE, LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU)— Lawmakers in Harveys Lake are hoping to avoid a huge tax increase this year after taxpayers cried foul.

It has been 11 years since the Luzerne County borough saw a property tax increase, and the original proposal was to raise taxes 100 percent.

But following public comment Thursday night, council voted to move to plan "B", a 30 percent increase for 2025.

The increase is less, but it would still sting, costing some homeowner as much as three hundred bucks more a year.

"A 30 percent increase is going to mean about $20 for every hundred thousand dollars of equity in your home. If you had $1 million home it would go up $300," said Robinn Mikalic, Harveys Lake Borough Council.

"I mean, we do have a lot of senior citizens, and it's a tough market these days and I'm concerned about people that might not be able to make it," voiced Michelle Boice, Harveys Lake.

A meeting will be held at the Lake-Noxen Elementary School on January 28 and a vote to finalize the tax rate will be made.
