Fire leaves Kingston school modular unit severely damaged

KINGSTON, LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — Authorities say a Kingston modular unit was severely damaged after a fire Saturday afternoon.

Officials say the Kingston Fire Department and other units from Wilkes-Barre, Forty-Fort, Shavertown, and Wilkes-Barre Township were called to a reported structure fire on Institute Lane at 1:20 p.m. Saturday.

Kingston Fire Department Chief Frank Guido told 28/22 News the fire was contained to the modular unit without incident and the fire seems to be accidental.

Chief Guido explained the modular unit is a part of the Graham Academy, a school for children with special needs.

While two teachers were in an adjacent building, Chief Guido says no one was in the building where the fire broke out.

Chief Guido continued, saying there are no reported injuries and the building is not a total loss but does have significant damage that "will take some time to repair."

On Saturday, the Graham Academy announced on Facebook their Kingston location will be closed to students on Monday, January 27.

According to the statement from Graham Academy, their Luzerne and Mayfield locations are open and all Kingston staff will report to the Kingston location "at regular time."
