Man injured after hit and run crash, driver charged

BUCKINGHAM TWP., WAYNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — Investigators have charged a man accused of fleeing a hit and run that left a victim flown to the hospital.

According to the Wayne County Office of the District Attorney, 41-year-old Jason Smith, of Equinunk, has been charged after fleeing a crash on State Route 191 in Buckingham Township.

Investigators stated in October 2024 state police were called for a crash where the offending car fled the scene and a person was seriously injured.

A witness to the crash reported that they and the victim stopped on SR191 to try and move a tree blocking the roadway. While removing the tree, another car, driven by Smith, approached the area at a fast speed, police said.

Juvenile driver charged after hit and run

As stated in the release, the two tried to stop Smith but his vehicle hit the tree and the tree hit the victim. Smith told them he was leaving the scene to get help, however, he allegedly did not return to the crash.

The victim sustained serious injuries to his legs and was flown from the scene.

Smith has been charged with accidents involving serious injury, aggravated assault by vehicle, failing to stop and give aid, and other related offenses.
