WYOMING, LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — A man is facing charges after police say he went to a credit union and tried to cash a fake state treasury check.
According to the Wyoming Area Regional Police Department, officers were called to the UFCW Community Credit Union on Wyoming Avenue for a man trying to pass a fake United States Treasury check.
The man was identified as Abdoul Kafaba, 24, of Wilkes-Barre, who was trying to deposit a treasury check worth $7,098.17 into an account that was opened less than one month ago, police stated.
$4,000 stolen from bank account
Investigators said this incident was similar to various thefts that happened at UFCW over the past several months. Bank officials ran the check numbers through a portal that alerted them to a possible fraud attempt.
Kafaba was arrested and he claimed the check arrived through the mail but it did not come with a check "stub" that normally accompanies all government checks, as stated in the affidavit.
Kafaba has been charged with forgery and criminal theft attempts.
