Volunteers preparing to bring Saint Patrick's Day cheer to Lackawanna County seniors

SCRANTON, LACKAWANNA COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — Volunteers in Scranton are preparing to bring Saint Patrick's Day cheer to thousands of seniors. Dozens of volunteers with the Shamrock Heart Foundation gathered on Saturday in South Scranton.

They prepared more than 3,600 corsages and boutonnieres.

The flowers will reach thousands of residents in dozens of nursing homes and hospitals across Lackawanna County.

The tradition, now in its 32nd year, is a way to show seniors they are being thought of fondly.

"Well, it's nice that, you're not saving the world, but you're putting a smile on people's faces. And for the day, I've heard so many people say my mother was in the hospital at the time and she got this, and she still thinks about it every St. Patrick's Day," Shamrock Heart Foundation volunteer Jerry Gilpatrick said.

"Beautiful things like this, I guess, make someone's day, and it's nice to think about the people in your community, and this is a nice way to do it," said West Scranton High School Senior and volunteer Valerie Ayala.

Shamrock Heart Foundation volunteers will begin delivering the flowers and cards Monday morning, which is Saint Patrick's Day.
