Volunteers hand out corsages, boutonnieres to seniors for Saint Patrick's Day

SCRANTON, LACKAWANNA COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — It's a tradition that's been going on for three decades in Lackawanna County. More than 100 volunteers with the Shamrock Heart Foundation spend days making thousands of corsages and boutonnieres.

Its a small gesture for Saint Patrick's Day for those in hospitals, nursing homes, and assisted-living facilities.

They are packaged with a card and a simple message to make sure the recipient knows they are being thought of.

In its 32nd year, the foundation has brought smiles to hundreds in nursing homes and hospitals.

"Well, I've talked to a lot of people who have said, you know, 'My mother was in the hospital years ago and she got one on Saint Patrick's Day and she still talks about it.' And it just touches you that they remember something like that," volunteer Jerry Gilpatrick said.

More than 3,800 corsages and boutonnieres were handed out on Monday.
