SCRANTON, LACKAWANNA COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — It’s the time of year for spring musicals and one professional production is set to support higher education in our area.
It’s a hidden gem tucked inside this Lackawanna College building on Vine Street.
The ‘People’s Security Bank Theater’ is one of the original vaudeville theaters in Scranton’s district.
“Scranton School District built Scranton Central High School around the theater and that building today, the high school merged with the theater is what we call Angeli Hall here on the campus of Lackawanna College.”
Its legendary roots date back to 1923.
The theater remains quiet until opening night of a production - where characters like 'sister amnesia' get ready for showtime.
It’s not nonsense though, it’s ‘Nunsense’ put on by ‘Our Cabaret Productions’ this weekend.
“It’s a musical comedy about five sisters who are raising money because they had a small disaster back at the convent.”
General manager of the small professional theater production company, John Baldino says the point of 'nunsense' is to humanize nuns to the audience.
“It’s not a show that pokes fun of nuns or of religious life.” . . . “it’s really a show that reveres these sisters and these women for what they did and what they do.”
For 35 dollars a ticket, you’ll see a production of a fundraiser that’s also a fundraiser, with proceeds going towards Lackawanna College.
“When you come to see a show like Nunsense you’re really investing in the future because you’re contributing to that educational mission in our region.”
After a five-year hiatus since COVID, the Little Sisters of Hoboken return to the Electric City for Nunsense Saturday night at 7 and Sunday afternoon at 2.
Lackawanna College’s School of Hospitality is also offering a pre-show dinner on Saturday and a pre-show lunch on Sunday before the productions.
