Popular recreation spot turning into illegal dump site

HANOVER TOWNSHIP, LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — A popular spot for walking dogs and running is starting to look like a dump. Locals say illegal dumping is becoming a growing problem in the area.

Residents in the area of Robinson Circle in the Hanover Industrial Park in Luzerne County say it's a spot where many walk their dogs or enjoy time outside, but now it's plagued with garbage.

"I typically bring my three dogs over to Robinson Circle just to take them on like nightly walks," Jonathan Casey from Warrior Run explained.

Casey likes walking his dogs along Robinson Circle to enjoy the nature, not the troves of trash scattered along the roadway.

"There's nice areas and you wanna just be able to go out and enjoy them and just see nature for nature and instead, what we end up seeing is just trash and garbage," said Casey.

He says the area is a popular spot for recreation. It's also a popular spot for many to illegally dump their trash, something Casey says he notices daily.

"A lot of people will come over and do their daily runs here and just come over just to walk and get some exercise. Every day that I come back I can always pick out something new. Whether it's a TV, a vacuum cleaner, or a seat from a car or garbage bags, it all ends up over here," Casey explained.

Robinson Circle is county-owned, which means the county is responsible for keeping it clean. Casey believes the illegal dumping there has gotten worse over the years and says it's a problem he sees across the area.He hopes officials will keep a closer eye on Robinson Circle, and try to keep it cleaned up for good.

"You just see all the land in our area that gets taken, but the land that is here you wanna see it be clean and good for the animals and for everybody else that's just around to enjoy," said Casey.

The road is county-owned. 28/22 News reached out to Luzerne County Manager Romilda Crocamo who says the chamber provides a dumpster for use twice a year and crews as well as prisoners clean up what they can.
