Federal workers protest in Wilkes-Barre against DOGE job cuts

WILKES-BARRE, LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — Federal workers are sounding off this weekend about the way the Trump administration is reducing government.

A crowd gathered on Saturday at Wilkes-Barre Public Square to demonstrate.

Many held signs calling for the protection of workers from the gutting of several federal departments.

Protesters took aim at the recently created Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) and tech billionaire Elon Musk who leads it.

Among those on hand were workers employed through the Department of Veterans Affairs who fear a proposal to cut roughly 80,000 VA jobs nationwide.

"Everything they're telling the general public are lie about the VA. They're trying to diminish contracts that support and take care of our veterans and the building," Wilkes-Barre VA Nurse and AFGE Local 1699 President Janet Oborski explained.

"We're hoping to save Social Security and the V.A., and Tobyhanna. This is just craziness happening right now and we're just fighting back," said Plains Township SSA Worker and Protester Renae Dymond.

Organizers say they plan to hold protests like this one in the future to make their voices heard.
