Railriders ready for season opener

MOOSIC, LACKAWANNA COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — NEPA sports fans love to see a buffed and shined diamond this time of year all because baseball is back!

Lighting up the diamond at PNC Field, with Champ walking up to home plate ready to hit it out of the park and kick off the baseball season.

The Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Railriders have their season opener on the road this Friday, but in two weeks – fans will see major improvements made at the ballpark in Moosic.

Adam Marco, Director of Communications, says “being away to start this season after so much going on during the offseason it’s that, ‘ok it’s time.’”

New LED lights is the showstopper, making their debut at its home opener.

“We hit a home run, you’re going to see a light show. We get a win at the end of the night, you’re going to see a light show so there’s a lot of things that we can do with it now that the old bulb lights didn’t let us do.”

The home clubhouse for players also underwent a massive expansion.

New menu items such as this ‘walk-off chicken sandwich’ made with cheese-stuffed breadsticks and a black pepper maple bacon burger with garlic aioli.

That experience going much more than just the sport. Bringing back fan-favorite events such as 90s night and new ones like the ‘amazing golf ball whacker night’ with special guest Christopher McDonald aka Shooter McGavin from Happy Gilmore.

“We strive to make changes that improve their experience so that, you know you have season ticket holders, some of who have been coming here since 1989 so what are you doing on a yearly basis to entertain?”

The Scranton/Wilkes-barre Railriders will be taking on the Rochester Red Wings on April 8th for its home opener starting at 6:35.

The Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Railriders’ game on Friday in Lehigh Valley will mark a historical milestone as the franchise's 5,000th game.
