BERWICK, COLUMBIA COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — A local record shop is giving old media a second chance at life.
Watching a movie nowadays is as easy as clicking a button but before streaming services, you had to get your hands dirty.
“To see how people get excited about these films, that’s what it’s all about.”

VHS’ and VCRs could be classified as ‘dead media’. That’s why Waxpax Record Shop owner Mark Collier expanded his business and is set to open the ‘dead media room’ in Berwick.
“I love that there are physical media that you can have a relationship with so when you go to your VCR, or your turntable, you have to actually put it on, and now it becomes more than just a passing thought and just a push of a button.”
Having its grand opening on Saturday at 10 a.m., thousands of VHS titles are up for grabs giving you all the nostalgia.
“Immediately it can transport you to a different time in your life, good, bad, or indifferent, it just does and I think that’s something that not only me, but a lot of people, that’s where they find the intrigue with things like vhs.”
Collier says he and his business partner Vinny traveled across state lines to find something for everyone.
Most VHS tapes cost around two to five dollars, but some of the rarer ones to find like Child’s Play and Royal Rumble, can cost anywhere from $40 to $50.
The Dead Media Room also has VCRs for sale.
This weekend’s opening will include free giveaways, trivia, and a performance from the local band, ‘Into Sunday.’
Collier tells us the community’s response is already overwhelming.. And it came with a surprise.
“I expected it to be gen-Xers, people my age, that would come in because of the nostalgia, and we do have that, but it’s the younger generation too who are really tapping into that older vibe and I think that’s wonderful.”
The first 50 people through the door at its 10 a.m. grand opening on Saturday will get a free gift.
