Details released after bicyclist dies during crash

BANKS TWP., CARBON COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — State police released details on a deadly crash where a bicyclist was hit and killed by a car.

According to Pennsylvania State Police, on March 25, around 5:00 p.m., troopers responded to Spring Mountain Road on State Route 93 in Banks Township for a crash.

Police say a car and two bicyclists were traveling westbound when the driver, an 87-year-old woman from Weatherly, hit the bicyclists with the front of her bumper.

One of the bicyclists, 30-year-old man Jancel Santos-Perez from Beaver Meadows, was thrown to the hood of the car, onto the windshield, and landed 100 feet from the point of impact, state police reported.

Santos-Perez was pronounced dead on the scene by the Carbon County Assistant Coroner. The cause of death was due to blunt force injuries, and his death has been ruled an accident.

The second bicyclist, a 39-year-old woman from Beaver Meadows, was pushed to the right side of the roadway during the crash. She was taken to Lehigh Valley Hazleton for non-life-threatening injuries.

The Carbon County Coroner's Office says they are investigating the incident along with the State Police Hazleton and the state police reconstruction unit.
