VIDEO: Car lit on fire in Scranton neighborhood

SCRANTON, LACKAWANNA COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — Shocking video shows a car on fire in Scranton, and police say it was a case of arson. 28/22 News Reporter Avery Nape met with the victims of the fire that left their family vehicle in ashes.

Just after 1:00 a.m. on March 21, the family woke up to the sound of their car alarm blaring.

Surveillance video shows two masked men pouring flammable liquid into the vehicle before lighting it on fire and fleeing the scene.

The vehicle's owner, who requested not to be identified for his family's safety, says they were sound asleep when it happened.

"We were sleeping, it was in the middle of the night. I had to go to work the next day. All I heard was the alarm going off, and what sounded like a crash, like somebody crashed a car," the victim said.

That's when he quickly got up, gathered his wife and kids, and got to safety.

He says this isn't the first time his family has had problems with neighbors, but it never went this far before.

"They punctured, popped my tires for like four months. At least twice a month," the victim continued.

The man tells 28/22 News they've had issues with neighbors since they moved in nearly a year ago.

"Alcohol being consumed outside, drugs being consumed outside, just too many things. People telling me to leave from here, that I don't belong over here," the victim added.

According to the victim, the area has been a hot spot for illegal activity since they moved in.

He believes people have the right to do what they want in their free time as long as it doesn't affect his family.

"I told them 'I have a family, I'm not putting up with this,'" the victim stated.

Scranton Police are asking the community for help identifying the two people suspected of setting that car on fire.

Anyone with information is asked to contact the police.
