Husband accused of shooting wife inside home

SOUTH ABINGTON TWP., LACKAWANNA COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — A husband is being charged after police say he shot his wife inside their home in South Abington Township.

Investigators stated that on April 1, around 9:00 p.m., officers were called to Northern Spy Road for a report of a shooting. The caller, a 12-year-old girl, stated her father shot her mother inside the home, police reported.

Police said the child told them that her parents were having arguments and getting a divorce. She heard them arguing Tuesday evening, and her father, Grant Callender, was threatening to beat her mother, saying "This is the end," as stated in the affidavit.

According to court documents, the child's mother told her to call for help, and the child claimed Callender came into the room and shot her mother with a handgun. The child ran and called 911 from the basement, then, while running outside, she heard three more gunshots, the affidavit states.

The victim was taken to Geisinger CMC after she suffered gunshot wounds to the face, chest area, and shoulder. Her current condition is unknown at this time.

Callender is currently being charged with attempted criminal homicide, aggravated assault, endangering the welfare of a child, and other related offenses.
