SCRANTON, LACKAWANNA COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — A local World War II veteran has something big to celebrate this week. He turns 103 years old on Thursday.
A birthday wish and a celebration for Scranton resident Al Liberatore.
"All this attention because I'm 103 years old, that's what makes me happy," Al said.
Al was born in Scranton on April 3, 1922. He enlisted in high school and left in 1940 to fight in World War II. In fact, he never received his diploma until a few years ago. In 2017, Al was presented with his official high school diploma.
28/22 News sat with the Navy veteran as he reflected on his time in the war.
"I was aboard the USS Nicholas, a destroyer. We served in the Pacific Theater of Operations," Al explained.
The World War II veteran spends a lot of time at the Scranton Senior Community Center on Jackson Street.

It was a packed house, from friends to family, all eager to celebrate this milestone with him. He was even presented with a certificate of recognition by the county.
"I'm 103 alive, happy, and smiling, that's what makes the world go round," Al added.
His advice for living longer? Smiling.
"The most important thing is to smile. If you smile, it will keep you healthy and happy. Just don't complain, no one wants to hear a complainer," Al said.
Al's actual birthday is tomorrow.
Happy birthday, Al, and thank you for your service.
