Monroe County asks residents to weigh in on disaster plans

TANNERSVILLE, MONROE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU)— Monroe County wants residents to weigh in on how it handles disasters.

The county released an updated hazard mitigation plan Thursday during a meeting at the Pocono campus of Northampton Community College.

It outlines the area's biggest risks from natural and human-made disasters and what can be done about them.

Firefighters warn of misleading fundraising letters

Emergency Management Officials spent more than a year working with all 20 of Monroe's municipalities to identify those hazards.

At the meeting, they asked the community to share what they think before the plan becomes official.

"This is that opportunity for our community members to take a look at the plan before it goes into effect and is adopted by the municipalities in the county to have their voice heard. It's been a large mission of ours this entire process of making sure the community voice has been heard," stated Mary Ellen Keegan, Director, Monroe County Office of Emergency Management.

The plan also ensures the county will remain eligible for federal disaster funding.

The Monroe County Community now has 30 days to review the draft and make their opinions known.
