PA state parks see uptick in reservations

KIDDER TOWNSHIP, CARBON COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — It's going to be a busy summer at Pennsylvania state parks. In anticipation of warmer weather, parks and forests are seeing an uptick in camping reservations compared to last year.

Pennsylvania state parks remain staffed and ready to welcome visitors.

Data from the Department of Conservation and Natural Resources (DCNR) shows PA state parks and forests are seeing a 30% increase in campsite reservations following the launch of DCNR's "Still Open, Still Awesome" campaign last month.

With so much to do and see, summers at Hickory Run State Park are a big success.

"Our family campground has always been busy. You can make reservations at 11 months in advance, and so people have it on their calendars," said Hickory Run Complex Park Operations Manager Stacie Hall.

This year, they're expecting to welcome even more people. DCNR data shows reservations for camping at the park are up 61%.

This comes as many campsites at national parks remain closed indefinitely due to staffing shortages.

"The camping cottages are almost entirely booked. There's still some openings in August, September, October time frame," Hall explained.

With so many people expected, Hall says visitors should be mindful and remember there's lots to do and see in the park.

"If you go to a parking area and it's full, there's plenty of other things to do. Just head on over and check out something else and head back later in the day," Hall continued.

From Boulder Field to its many waterfalls, there's no shortage of sights to enjoy in the park.

PA state parks are free to enter, but if you are interested in reserving a camping spot, you can find more information online.
