Man sentenced after teen dies of fentanyl-laced cocaine

(WBRE/WYOU) — A man has been sentenced after authorities say he sold a 17-year-old fentanyl laced with cocaine, resulting in their death.

According to Acting U.S. Attorney John C. Gurganus, 30-year-old Federico Rosario of Scranton was sentenced to 24 years for distributing a controlled substance and drug distribution resulting in death.

In July of 2021, officials say Rosario sold small quantities of cocaine to a 17-year-old, and then in August of 2021, Rosario sold the victim .4 grams of a substance represented to be cocaine.

30 minutes later, after taking a portion of the substance, the victim sent Rosario a message asking what was in it because "it had him spinning as though he was drunk," as stated in the release.

After not receiving a response from Rosario, the victim sent a message eight seconds later. Still, Rosario never responded to or acted on the victim’s messages, stated Acting U.S. Attorney John C. Gurganus.

The next morning, the victim was found dead in his room.

Laboratory analysis of the drug sold to the victim showed it to be a mixture of cocaine and fentanyl. An autopsy confirmed the victim had fentanyl in his system at the time of death.
