Don't toss LVHN data breach checks in mail

DICKSON CITY, LACKAWANNA COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — If you recently received a check in the mail connected to the Lehigh Valley Health Network (LVHN) data breach, don't toss it: It's real.

A $65,000,000 settlement was reached after a class-action lawsuit claimed LVHN failed to properly protect patient data.

That breach, exposed in February of last year, involved more than 134,000 patients, with some personal information and even photos posted to the dark web by a hacker group known as "Blackcat."

Now, settlement checks are going out, but some people are mistaking them for junk mail.

Each person affected was placed into a "relief tier" that determines their payout, and most checks are being sent automatically.

If you think you're eligible and haven't received a check, you can look up your relief tier online using your unique ID.

The settlement still needs final court approval before all payments are issued.

Again, if you receive a check from the LVHN breach settlement, it's legitimate. Don't throw it away.
