YWCA gets $1M surprise donation

MUNCY, LYCOMING COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — A local women's organization was given a donation of more than $1,000,000 Wednesday evening to help them with some much-needed renovations.

The YWCA of Northcentral PA was awarded a check by Miele Manufacturing, and while the organization knew they'd be getting a donation, they had no idea how much.

Anyone who's spent time in a local bar, mini mart, or even a grocery store has seen Pennsylvania skill machines.

But on Wednesday, the company behind those machines, Miele Manufacturing, gave back in a big way.

"We love to help people. It gives us a good feeling inside, and we promote that within our whole organization," Pennsylvania Skills' Charitable Giving Director Nicole Miele said.

They awarded the YWCA of Northcentral PA a check for more than $1,000,000.

The shelter in Williamsport helps women and children fleeing domestic violence or homelessness.

"This grant opportunity is incredible. We are so, just humbled and so fortunate to have Miele in our backyards willing to give this type of donation to our organization," YWCA Northcentral PA CEO Amber Morningstar explained.

Morningstar tells 28/22 News the organization is currently operating out of a 97-year-old facility with outdated electrical and HVAC.

The YWCA provides services from temporary shelter and re-housing to custody exchange, counseling, and educational outreach, and this money will go a long way.

"Our system is very antiquated, and we have hundreds of families who are staying within our building every year," Morningstar added.

Morningstar says they plan to upgrade these systems and provide the best care possible to the community.

"Being able to provide a warm and comfortable space for them during the winter months and an air conditioned room in the summer is crucial for them to be able to heal," Morningstar continued.

While most of us may not be able to match that $1,000,000 amount, the YWCA is always accepting donations to help serve their community.
