'Horrific': Family of infant speaks after mother's alleged assault

WRIGHT TOWNSHIP, LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — The family of the four-month-old Luzerne County boy who was allegedly assaulted by his mother is speaking out Thursday.

The mother, 20-year-old Jazmine Clapper, remains locked up, accused of assaulting her son during an argument in a Mountain Top home.

The infant suffered a skull fracture, brain bleed, and other broken bones.

The family of a four-month-old boy whose mother police accuse of assaulting him is speaking out about a day they say they will never forget.

The baby suffered numerous injuries including a fractured skull.

The mother, 20-year-old Jazmine Clapper, remains locked up.

The good news is the baby, who is now nine months old, is doing great and is recovering from his injuries, so says his family. They say they know how close they came to losing him.

"It was heart wrenching, it felt like a million years. It's something I never want to see again ever," said the grandmother Christine.

Christine is the baby's grandmother, and says she was sitting in another room but saw Jazmine Clapper assault her grandson on a baby monitor camera.

She says the drama unfolded last November when she claims Clapper started an argument with her son inside her Mountain Top home.

"She was yelling and screaming, ran down the hallway. I happened to turn at the right moment," stated Christine.

She says the baby was in a deep sleep and describes what she saw.

"She just ran in grabbing him like from here, ripping him up out of the crib, more like grab and pull. From that point, it was grab pull then she let him go," recalled Christine.

She called 911. The baby's father says clapper was out of control.

"It wasn't really building up, it just kind of happened. She just she had those reactions in general. Like I said, she did the same thing with animals and stuff like that," explained TJ, the baby's father.

The baby suffered a fractured skull, a brain bleed, a broken finger, and heel. He spent several days in the hospital.

Mehalshick asked,"How is your son doing?"

"He's doing really good. He's developing very well, he's starting to crawl, he's starting to stand up," TJ responded.

Clapper was supposed to have a court hearing to face numerous charges including assault and child endangerment, but it was continued to next month.

"It's a very serious case. Obviously the injuries to the child were very serious. Nothing was taken lightly, it's something that does have to be investigated thoroughly," explained Officer David Winsock, Wright Township Police.

A judge denied her bail saying the charges are very serious, and that she is a flight risk. She lives in Tennessee. In fact, police traveled there last month to arrest her. We will have more on this case in the days ahead.
