(WBRE/WYOU)— Some federal law makers in our state are pushing for term limits in both the House and Senate.
A Pennsylvania congressman announced his co-sponsorship on the bill that would cap off the number of years a member has in congress.
Congressman Rob Bresnahan is co-sponsoring a bill that would limit those serving in the House of Representatives to three terms.
28/22 news spoke with him and he says public office should not be a life-long career.
"Today marks 110. I think you are 109 but I'm 110," stated Rep. Bresnahan (R), 8th Congressional District.
"This is not what I want to be doing for the next 50 years," voiced Rep. Bresnahan.
Bresnahan is backing a bill to make sure that does not happen.
He announced Thursday that he joined a bipartisan effort to create Congressional term limits.
The legislation, if ratified, would mean house members would be limited to serving twelve years.
"I think public service should exactly be that. It's very frustrating when you hear career politicians in year after year. That is not what our founding fathers envisioned when we went down," expressed Rep. Bresnahan.
"I don't think what we did back in the 1950s works what what we are doing now in 2025," said Rep. Brenda Pugh (R), PA 120th District.
Both Bresnahan and Republican Representative Brenda Pugh feel elected officials should change with the times.
"In order to make our communities better we need fresh ideas and and a way to get fresh ideas is fresh blood," stated Rep. Pugh
"Gearing up for the next generation of leadership is something I take very seriously and I think it will excite a lot of people to get involved," added Rep. Bresnahan.
The legislation was first introduced in the senate.
Earlier this month, Senator Dave McCormick proposed a joint resolution that would limit house members to serve 6 two year terms and senators to serve two six year terms.
In a statement he writes in part:
"Our founding fathers never imagined that congress would become an institution filled with career politicians who stay on well past retirement age and congress shouldn't be a place where people can get comfortable in their jobs."

"We have to be careful with how we implement it. It's going to have to be staggered in if stuff was to get passed because there is a sense of knowledge coming from our legislators who have been there a long time," stated Rep. Pugh.
Congressman Bresnahan defeated democrat matt cartwright who served in congress for 12 years.
Senator Dave McCormick defeated Democrat Bob Casey who served as senator for 18 years.
