Residents forced to move out of Wilkes-Barre apartment building

WILKES-BARRE, LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — Some residents in Luzerne County were out of their homes on Tuesday after their building was condemned.

A notice on the door of 16-22 East Union Apartments in Wilkes-Barre says the building is "unfit for human habitation."

The notice from the City of Wilkes-Barre's Code Enforcement Department also says the building is in violation of code for not having a fire alarm, electrical hazards, a plumbing issue, and a roof leak.

Ballot issues overshadow upcoming voting deadlines

A resident that we spoke to says he got a notice Tuesday morning that he had to be out of his apartment by 5:00 p.m.

"I am totally lost, I have no financial means to move or first and last months' rent for a new place, or nothing. I have no idea how I'm going to sort this out totally lost," said Wilkes-Barre resident Michael Hawley.

We did reach out to the company that owns the apartment building, but have not heard back.
