Family of St. Ubaldo's annual meatball & sauce competition

JESSUP, LACKAWANNA COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — Grab your aprons, dozens of local cooks will be competing against one another this weekend in Lackawanna County.

28/22 News has more on the ‘saucey’ competition that kicks off a month of festivities for the Family of Saint Ubaldo.

Cooking up some meatballs and sauce comes easily to some.

“Everybody has their own way of doing things. I’m lucky I grew up in a very Italian-rich environment where I learned how to cook at a young age,” explains Ron Augelli, the competition organizer at Family of Saint Ubaldo.

There are hundreds of ways to make the delectable dish, so why not put your recipe to the test in the family of Saint Ubaldo’s 2nd annual meatball and sauce competition in Jessup.

“You have ones that are like, ‘Wow, they must be from the same town in Italy or maybe it’s the same town here in Northeastern PA,’ and you can see a lot of similarities, but as the generations change and things are passed down, so do the recipes,” said Augelli.

You don’t have to be a professional to be in the running. Last year, the open competition featured dozens of homemade recipes, where more than 150 attendees voted for their favorite.

Just days from the event taking place at Jessup Hose Company Number One on Sunday, tons of new contenders are in the running.

“I did alright last year, you know I got to make some adjustments, and hopefully do a little bit better this year,” said Jesse Donnini of Family of Saint Ubaldo.

The May 4 event kicks off what this group calls their holiday season, with Saint Ubaldo Day just around the corner.

“Everybody’s wanting to be out there, wanting to have a lot of fun, and that’s all it is, it’s a fun time,” said Gino Stankosky of Family of Saint Ubaldo.

Bringing together food and the community, many would say, is the perfect recipe.

“Faith, family, and memories. You know what I mean, it doesn’t get more important than that or better,” stated JJ Mancia.

Think your family recipe could take home the win? You have until Friday to sign up and compete in the meatball and sauce competition.
