'Rocking Around the Block' in Wilkes-Barre to raise autism awareness

WILKES-BARRE, LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — You did not need to run or walk to take part in a 5K event in Downtown Wilkes-Barre. The Graham Academy hosted what was billed as Rock Around the Block. It featured live music, food, and fun activities on Public Square.

The Graham Academy offers special education to children living with autism or behavioral challenges.

People there today say raising awareness is important.

Runners come together in Plains Township for annual charity event

"We bring our staff here with members of the community to promote acceptance. We have families bring their children here. It's a day that everybody can get together and enjoy themselves," event organizer Bob Steinberger said.

"I love the population that we work with, and I want to be able to spread awareness for my students," teacher and event participant Michelle Toepfer stated.

Proceeds from today's 5K are going to the non-profit, A Moment of Magic, to help children with pediatric cancer.
