Three days of rain having an effect on local borough

HONESDALE, WAYNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU)— Crews continue to clean up in Honesdale as the borough battles rain and more flooding.

This follows Tuesday night's weather event, that caused a storm drainage pipe to burst, shut down roads, a nearby church, and a motel.

Just this week a major storm water pipe burst causing a sidewalk and entry way near St. John the Evangelist Church here on Vine Street to cave in. Several streets are shutdown.

It's been a busy week for crews in Honesdale.

Flood damaged area, prompts visit from congressman

Cars can be seen carefully driving through pools of water on Main and Fourth Streets in Honesdale.

Clogged pipes are causing water to be blocked from flowing into the river.

This comes after the borough suffered major damage from a week full of storms.

"The damage, we're still in assessment mode to see how much everything's going to cost and what it is we need to do. That'll be something we're taking care of over the next couple weeks," explained Mayor Derek Williams, Honesdale borough.

In the meantime, stones have been placed along what was washed away to prevent it from getting any worse, and DPW crews are working around the clock, monitoring the roads with PennDOT and trying to control the water flow.

"Our DPW crews are out there with our emergency responders kind of blocking off streets and cleaning up debris, so that's kind of something in a couple days to weeks mode, and then after that we'll be looking at comprehensive planning to address all of our storm water system in the borough," said Mayor Williams.

It's unclear what a cost or timeline would look like for a plan to address the storm water system here in Honesdale. State and federal officials visited the area this week to assess the damage to help the borough.
