Pair accused of fighting with police officers

DUNMORE, LACKAWANNA COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — A man and woman have been charged after police say the pair fought with Dunmore police officers.

According to the criminal complaint, on May 11, around 1:00 a.m., an officer was patrolling the borough on Prescott Avenue when they claim to have witnessed a man pushing a woman into the roadway with children nearby.

When the officer stopped to check on the situation, they say the man, later identified as Abelno Cahuec-Ruiz, 36, of Dunmore, started to run. When the officer attempted to pursue the woman, later identified as Karen Beatriz, 29, also from Dunmore, intervened by punching the officer in the face.

Police say they caught up with Cahuec-Ruiz attempting to enter the backyard of a residence he had been visiting earlier that day. Individuals on the other side of the fence held the gate shut to prevent entry.

The officer states that individuals in the backyard began to attack Cahuec-Ruiz after he made his way in until the officer ordered them to stop.

Officers say Cahuec-Ruiz then attempted to gain entry into the home, where they tried to place him in handcuffs. During this time, he started to attack the officer.

While attempting to arrest Cahuec-Ruiz, officers say Beatriz tried to physically remove the officer from him and put herself between them, shoving her hand in the officer's face.

Police noted that, during this time, two crying children were attempting to pull Beatriz away from the conflict.

When backup arrived, officers deployed a stun device on Beatriz and Cahuec-Ruiz to subdue them into custody.

The children were placed in the care of a family member.

Cahuec-Ruiz and Beatriz face multiple counts of aggravated assault and resisting arrest. Cahuec-Ruiz was unable to post bail. Beatriz posted $5,000 unsecured bail.
