VA hoping to connect veterans to services they need

WILKES-BARRE, LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU)— The Wilkes-Barre VA Medical Center is hoping to better connect homeless veterans to the services they need.

Thursday, the VA hosted a resource fair in Wilkes-Barre's Kirby Park.

Dozens came out to the 32nd annual Project Challenge Summit.

The free event connects local veterans to service providers and community organizations that help with food insecurity, mental health, and housing.

VA staff and volunteers say the number of unsheltered veterans in our area continues to grow, so events like this one are crucial.

"So unfortunately with the decrease in housing stock affordable housing availability, we've seen an uptick with our homeless numbers," stated Shannon McLafferty, homeless coordinator, Wilkes-Barre VA.

"There's a whole ton of programs up at the VA to help these veterans to get them back into society for housing, food, shelter anything," added Melanie Abromavage, volunteer/ veteran.

That event wrapped up around 2:00 p.m. Veterans can access services anytime by dialing 211.
