Fire displaces at least four people in Hazleton

HAZLETON, LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU)— A Friday evening fire damaged a duplex on both sides displacing some of its residents.

According to Hazleton City Deputy Fire Chief Shawn Jones, crews were called to the 400 block of Muir Avenue for a reported structure fire just after 5:00 p.m.

Jones says that when crews arrived on-scene, flamers were pouring out of 426 Muir Avenue.

Jones states that the occupants were not home at the time and all residents were out on the neighboring right side, 424 Muir Avenue, when he arrived on-scene

Officials say that the fire started in a second floor bedroom, and they are waiting on a fire marshal for the official cause.

One firefighter was hurt after he cut his nose on a piece of glass, according to Jones.

The Red Cross is assisting two adults and two children at 426 Muir Avenue temporarily and may be assisting two adults and three children on the 424 side as they suffered heavy water and smoke damage.

The building is not a total loss and can be repaired.
