FORKSTON TOWNSHIP, WYOMING COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — A special event near Meshoppen gives veterans and people with disabilities a day to enjoy the great outdoors. The North Branch Trout Derby Association held its Annual Trout Derby on Sunday in Forkston Township.
More than 1,500 trout were stocked in Mehoopany Creek, and some of the trout are as large as 26 inches.
Participants received bait, gear, and support from fishing guides to make sure everyone had a chance to reel one in.

"It is so enjoyable, it's very hard being handicapped and find a place that will really take you wholeheartedly as who you are and not eliminate the handicap for a day," Falls Township event attendee Tom Maloney stated.
"These guys are good people, you know they've helped out tremendously today while I'm dealing with the little guy (his son) and I couldn't ask for anything more, they do a good job," Jonathan Tennant, a Veteran from Binghamton, New York, told 28/22 News.
Besides fishing, the day included a pheasant hunt.
Organizers say the event is funded entirely by community donations and ticket sales through special raffles.
