PLAINS TOWNSHIP, LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — Luzerne County Head Start Incorporated is celebrating 60 years of results. For decades, Head Start programs have been providing educational and lifestyle services to low-income children and their families.
Giving students a head start once again: On Monday, Luzerne County Head Start awarded $25,500 in scholarships to 16 of its former students from high schools across Northeastern Pennsylvania.
On the list is Mariely Sosa, a senior at Wilkes-Barre Area High School.
Mariely suffers from a visual impairment and says as a child, Head Start gave her the confidence she needed.
"It's a learning environment and they teach you how to collaborate with others, no matter if you have a difference or not," Head Start Alumna Mariely Sosa said.
Head start leaders say their centers provide kids with more than just an education.

"When children come in, they're not only getting the educational services, but they're also getting health and mental health, and nutrition, and the family also is supported by our Head Start services," Luzerne County Head Start Inc. Executive Director Beth White told 28/22 News.
The LCHS Alumni Scholarship Program is in its 39th year and is funded by local businesses, organizations, and community members.
For students, the scholarship is just another way Head Start has helped set them up for success.
"Head start has really helped me with my personality, my development. Yeah, I really appreciate Head Start and what they do for kids," Head Start Alumna Emilia Alcantara stated.
In total, the LCHS Alumni Scholarship Program has given out over $380,000 since the program's inception.
