Seven decades of memories and projects coming to an end

WILKES-BARRE, LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU)— A beloved hardware store will soon close its doors in Wilkes-Barre.

After 70 years, Walter's Hardware on Coal Street in Wilkes-Barre will close.

The closure comes after the death of 72-year-old owner Walter Letanski who unexpectedly passed away last December.

Expect a cool, soggy Memorial Day weekend

He along with his wife Karen, owned and operated Walter's Hardware.

She has now decided it is time to retire.

Not only does the store offer materials for fix-it and repair jobs, but also is a hobbyist's dream, offering fun, immersive displays that children and adults have loved for decades.

"When I moved out here, I was able to find a store 'cause I live nearby and I was able to find everything I needed. I was to develop a relationship with Walter, god rest his soul, and his wife Karen and that's what my memories are. I'm gonna miss it " said 15-year customer of Walter's Hardware, Chris Paul.

Walter's Hardware plans to be open for at least a couple more weeks to sell more of its inventory before closing the doors for good.
