Show of patriotism marks Memorial Day weekend in Wyoming

WYOMING, LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — A show of patriotism is helping mark this Memorial Day weekend at an annual event. A Revolutionary War Memorial Service was held on Sunday at the Wyoming Monument along Wyoming Avenue.

227 American flags were placed in front of the monument to symbolize each patriot killed in the Battle of Wyoming.

Patriotic bunting was also placed on the fence.

Those who attended the service reflected on the importance of preserving and honoring such a significant part of local history.

"We take for granted the sacrifice that our soldiers during the Revolutionary War, the sacrifices they did, and we take for granted the, the freedom of liberties which all started during the Revolutionary War," said 24th Connecticut Militia Regiment President and Reenactor Sherry Emershaw.

"I think everyone should realize the sacrifices that the people that established this area had to make to be able to make it here," Robert Schmidt from Old Forge told 28/22 News.

This year marked a shift in location for the Revolutionary War service.

It moved to the Wyoming Monument after previously being held in Forty Fort.
