Two spellers from NEPA make their way to National Spelling Bee

(WBRE/WYOU) — The "Scripps National Spelling Bee" is underway this week right outside Washington, DC. More than 240 kids are spelling words that some of us have never heard before.

The quarterfinals kicked off Wednesday morning, and the semifinals will get underway later.

There are two spellers from our area who made their way down to the nation's capital: 10-year-old Anjali Agarwal from Danville and 13-year-old Rowena Creswell-Blickley from Pottsville.

They both shared what this opportunity means to them.

100-year-old piece of Carbondale history is coming home

"I've been working at this since I was in fourth grade. And I'm in seventh now, and just the fact that I have my power, my power in spelling, has been able to extend to something of this level. The national script spelling bee is astronomical demand is a, very astonished by it," Creswell-Blickley said.

"The competition has been great. It's my first time, so I didn't really expect myself to get this far. So I've already reached my goals, so that's great," Agarwal stated.

Both girls were unable to advance past the 5th round of competition.

The winner of the 100th Scripps National Spelling Bee will be crowned Thursday night.
