Getting upclose with nature in Wilkes-Barre

WILKES-BARRE, LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — Damp weather could not stop some folks from getting up close with nature in Wilkes-Barre. The local band, The Pickups, played some environmentally inspired music for the first-ever BioBlitz at Kirby Park Natural Area and Nesbitt Park.

The floodplain is home to a range of plants and animals that play a crucial role in maintaining balance in the ecosystem.

Organizers wanted to hold this event for three basic reasons: Education, exploration, and celebration.

"Really, really cool opportunity to just understand what living organisms are living here and how people can maybe be better stewards of the environment," Pennsylvania Environmental Council NEPA Program Coordinator Rachael Stark stated.

"If you stay here long enough and you have an eye for it you might see Bald Eagles, you might see Peregrine Falcons. You will see mergansers and Great Blue Heron and that's right here, right across the river from downtown Wilkes-Barre," Volunteer Jan Lokuta told 28/22 News.

The Riverfront Parks Committee sponsored Saturday's BioBlitz.

Their next big event, Riverfest, is scheduled for June 20 through June 22 at Nesbitt Park.
