"Well, the first goal of potential use of force is to diffuse or de-escalate," said Director of the Lackawanna College Police Academy Kevin Mahoney.

"We start our cadets off very early on with a full block of law and concept. So, the laws that surround the use of force," explained Mahoney.

Mahoney says they cover as many scenarios as possible in their training.

"We have recognized when to properly use force, recognizing actual threats where deadly force has to be used, keep hammering that information into them, and putting them into situations where they have to make those split-second decisions," said Mahoney.

And Mahoney says someone wielding a knife can present a risk, just as threatening as a person with a gun.

"Knives are especially dangerous because people can traverse a very short distance very quickly. Especially of the person's active state of mania or under the influence of some kind of drugs," explained Mahoney.

Luzerne County District Attorney Sam Sangeudolce says the investigation into the officer-involved shooting in Wilkes-Barre is moving forward.

"I hope that the public and everyone can appreciate the stress the police are under. Obviously, in this particular incident, it's still under investigation. However, these decisions have to be made in split seconds," said Sangeudolce.

Satin King remains hospitalized on Tuesday night. The man whom she stabbed in his car was treated and released from the hospital.
