New dementia care program opens for patients

WILKES-BARRE, LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU)— Through the power of sensory, stimulating the right side of the brain in dementia patients is the purpose of a new Luzerne County program.

Embassy of Wyoming Valley Nursing Home in Wilkes-Barre held its ribbon cutting unveiling it's "Memory Care," program to the public.

The program serves people diagnosed with dementia where, in most cases, the left side of the brain is affected.

Features of the program include mint painted walls to improve patients emotional state, music like nature sounds to provide a calming sense, and red plates to stimulate the appetite.

All elements of the program are meant to help keep the residents at peace, under stimulated and happy.  

"Dementia doesn't have to be scary. It's just a different part of life and we can care for them with dignity and respect in ways through this program," explained Kelly Dee, corporate director, Memory Care Embassy of Wyoming Valley.

"It's been fantastic because being able to build a program from the ground up is a very challenging experience but it's so rewarding," added John Swarts, director of Memory Care Embassy of Wyoming Valley.

The program can serve up to 60 residents all diagnosed with dementia and at any stage.
